“We’re told these days that the hottest and fastest wire into memory is our sense of smell, but music must run a close second. Some songs carry us into a certain mood, some to a general region of our past lives, and some to a very particular moment and situation in time,” states Stephen Corey in A Voice for the Lonely. I cannot think of a time in my life where music hasn’t been there because I use music in times of trouble and in times of joy. It is in the background of every memory I have.…
Mitarbeiter, traurigkeit, leid, gedemütigt, verängstigt, terrorisiert, missbraucht, diskriminiert, and opfer are all German words that translate into words that describe what the Jews in the Lodz ghetto were and the feelings that they may have experienced. In order the words translate to workers, sadness, grief, humiliated, scared, terrorized, abused, discriminated, and lastly, victims. Jews were looked at as different and evil during the time period 1933 to 1945, also known as the time period of the Holocaust. Many Jews were sent away to concentration camps and locked up in ghettos; for instance, one of the ghettos that Jews were forced to live in was the Lodz ghetto. The Jews in the Lodz ghetto were victimized because they were forced…
The book Ghettoside by Jill Leovy is an analysis of crime statistics. The book shows that although African-American males are just 6% of the total population, they constitute 40% of those murdered in the United States (Leovy, 2015). Leovy narrows her analysis of murder cases and police investigations in South Los Angeles as an example of what happens in other urban areas that are dominantly occupied by poor African Americans. She also focuses on specific cases of murder, how the law enforcement reacted and the views of the relatives and friends of the victims. In 2013, Blacks accounted for 32% of all homicides in Los Angeles despite being 8% of the total population (Leovy, 2015).…
The path to the new world was a long, hard journey for European Jews. They had to endure many hardships, with everything culminating to passing a physical examination and getting their passport stamped in order to be allowed entry into America. America was seen as the land of opportunity for many Jews, and 5 out of every 6 Jewish immigrants decided to settle in Manhattan, primarily on the lower east side. The lower east side of Manhattan was a very congested area, and considered to be the slum of New York. Out of the poverty, and over population, however, arose a movement among young Jewish women.…
When people start out, they might not have any experience with the music. It is important not only to teach them the notes and rhythms, but also to teach the musicality of the music; the feelings and emotions of the…
When I entered the education landscape, I was foreign to the ideas and the nature of those that saw themselves as something more than just a student. I never thought that those students that sat behind the deteriorating desks could educate themselves. Ergo, as I transferred from middle school to high school, I began to discover those students that were seen as insignificant if I wanted to succeed within what was previously taught to me as the “real world”. Yet, it was through those encounters with those strange and unique individuals where I was exposed to something pure. I remember the first time I was ever exposed to music as an educational structure for me to discover myself in.…
Outkast is a duo formed in the early 90s by Andre 3000 and his high school rival and career friend Big Boy. The young artist began calling themselves “Two Shades Deep” as amateurs and later changed their names to Outkast. The group gained popularity with his singles like “Hey yeah” being released and jumping to the top slots on radio charts everywhere. Being considered underground and not yet mainstream making a number one song was definitely not something these two performers ever expected only dreamed of. Starting out in shopping malls when they were just sixteen years old the band participated in hip hop battles and began getting a lot of local attention.…
“It all happened so fast. The ghetto. The deportation. The sealed cattle car. The fiery altar upon which the history of our people and the future of mankind were meant to be sacrificed” (Elie Wiesel).…
Whenever people think about music, they may think of their favorite song or a band they used to listen too. Most, I believe, don’t think of music as a form of literacy. There are few, however, that can see why it is related to literacy and also why it is important. The literacy practices involved in it can help us get a better understanding of music’s role in our lives.…
The Holocaust was a horrible event in history, and a time of terror for millions of Jewish people. The ultimate goal of Hitler and the Nazis was to exterminate all of the Jews and create a perfect Aryan race. The first step in this awful process required the establishment of ghettos. Ghettos were mainly used to keep the Jewish population in one place until the Germans could find a way to kill the entire population. The first ghetto was established in 1939, and the largest ghetto was the Warsaw ghetto.…
As stated by the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, “Music affects our moods, our attitudes, our emotions, and our behavior; we wake to it, dance to it, and sometimes cry to it. From infancy it is an integral part of our lives” (Senate Committee). From the time of infancy, people are influenced by the culture around them. In Banks’ article, she wrote about a woman named Karen Stevenson and her young sons. In the article, it states, “[Karen’s]…
People and music are inseparable as Macdonald (2008, 39) argues that ‘We are all musical. Every human being has a biological, social and cultural guarantee of musicianship.’ It is hardly possible to live without hearing music in daily life, and people has been building musical identity since they are born by negotiating through it. Thus, music is a significant matter in personal identity and analysis of one’s life can reveal one’s musical identity. This essay will demonstrate the analysis of my musical identity based on my life.…
