1. How is music used by teenagers, what role does music play in their lives?
It is with no doubt that music has become a part of our everyday lives. In fact, it is everywhere and is listened by a vast majority of the population. In the article “Policy Statement-Impact of Music, Music Lyrics, and Music Videos on Children and Youth”, the use of music by teenagers is discussed in depth. In fact, music plays a big role in the lives of these young people who are in a period where they are finding and discovering themselves. Being a part of growing up, some can even say that the music they listen to makes them who they are. For instance, it contributes to identity formation since music is a means to achieve group identity and integrate to youth culture, knowing that social acceptance is very important to them at this stage in their lives. Also, other than the fact that it provides entertainment, it can also have impacts on other aspects in our life. For example, as briefly mentioned before, it contributes to the socialization between adolescents and the establishment of relationship since it creates opportunities of sharing with others. On the other hand, males use it more as a stimulant, a way to boost their energy level and create more positive images of themselves.
2. Why is there concern about child/teen consumption of music (the amount of time spent listening to music)?
Studies have shown that young people spend a bigger amount of time listening to music than watching television (average of 40h/week or 2.45 hours per day or 1.5-2.5h per day depending on the study), which means that their consumption of music is really high.
Other statistics:
At-risk youth: 6.8h per day
4th-6th graders: 98% listen to popular music, 72% almost
