USAICoE NCOA SLC 18-507 Legacy Leader: CSM HARBIN The purpose of this paper is to discuss why CSM Don Harbin is my Legacy Leader. “Leadership is the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to complete the mission.” (Headquarters, Department of the Army (HQDA), 2012) This example is the Army's definition of leadership. I witnessed my Brigade CSM talking to a young Soldier in the Command Group area. At the time I knew who he was, but I did not realize that he was going to be a mentor to me in the next following months. That CSM happened to be CSM Harbin. During my time as the Command Group Administrative Clerk, I was taught so many things in regards to leadership and setting the example for Soldiers. At the time I was a Specialist, so I did not lead any Soldiers. CSM Harbin used his time to help me with my job while providing insight and knowledge while remaining professional at all times. Initially, I did not know CSM Harbin was suffering from a shoulder injury that affected him for several years. He continued to report to work and held his military bearing as a true professional. He not only showed continued resiliency but remained composed and confident while going through his own personal issues. He never made an excuse about his injury but showed all the NCOs that if he could push through and do his job, we can as well. As a young Specialist, this impacted me in many ways. I was aware that being a leader you had to lead and be present for your Soldiers but the sacrifice was something I did not consider when taking on the responsibility of being an Army
