As Maya Angelou once said, “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, and how you can come out of it.” Because defeat will only hinder your learning process and make it increasingly difficult to overcome obstacles presented by ADHD. ADHD sufferers, like myself, must go through a repeated pattern of hyperactivity, day dreaming and impulsiveness. However, there are healthy outlets to combat the effects of ADHD like methods of relaxation following medication use, working with accommodation services in school to boost school performance, and working on procrastination techniques.

A condition represented by continued patterns of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Many are prescribed common medications like Adderall, Ritalin and Concerta. But they only last for 4-12 hours, giving a temporary reduction in symptoms, but not fully treating those prescribed. Therefore, ADHD patients must find other methods to cope with their disability. Many have chosen outlets or activities to handle the overstimulation such as, sports, video games and forms of exercise. Massage therapy is another outlet which has added benefits to sufferers. This is a very effective technique that has been studied by researchers like Tiffany Field, the executive director of the Touch Research Institutes in Miami. The study conducted was represented in the issue of Adolescence magazine in 1998, which selected 28 adolescents. Of the 28, 14 received 15-minute massages for 10 continuous school days, and the other 14 received 15 minutes of relaxation therapy for the same amount of time. The result was an outstanding amount of happiness, less hyperactivity and an increased ability to stay on-task for a longer period of time in class (Field). This goes to show, relaxation can help …show more content…
I had challenges in school with time and execution of tests because I felt like I didn’t have enough time to work on them, which effected my grades and learning performance. So, I decided to combat this obstacle and applied for accommodations so I could receive school assistance through Disability Services at PCC. This service then can provide myself, and other students with the ability to have extra time on homework, projects and tests. One method I have used during tests to help me is to read each question carefully once, then proceed to read it again by looking at the main words presented in the context of the sentence. This method then allows me to fully comprehend the question and answer it correctly without confusion. In addition, extra time will then reduce the stress of finishing tests because of the difficulty it takes ADHD students to understand questions. Which will ultimately boost our test scores because of our meticulous re-reading and work on each answer. A research study done by MD Irene Loe and Heidi Feldman in 2007, in association with the University of Pittsburg school of Medicine, mentions that ADHD sufferers “fail more grades, achieve lower ratings on all school subjects…and perform more poorly on standardized academic achievement tests than normal controls” due to them “functioning about 25% in
