Both leaders and managers should create smart goals. Smart is an acronym for goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. The majority of issues with achieving goals comes from a lack of clarity. That is why the goals a manager or leader sets must be specific and clear. Each person must know and understand the role they play and how the role they play contributes to the “big picture”. Goals must cascade from the top down. The goal must be able to be broken down in steps whether that is in numerical or financial terms. When the measures are clear it is easier to focus on what it takes to achieve those numbers. They appeal to their followers emotions. The purpose must be communicated by the leader. Vision and values are used to communicate purpose and can appeal to emotions. The leader links values that are important to the group with a desired activity or outcome. Martin Luther King was a leader who communicated his purpose and successfully gained followers. Leaders use rhetoric to communicate their purpose either in written form or verbally. Leaders that use imagery during their rhetoric are more successful in gaining followers. Martin Luther King used imagery when he presented a vision for the future by stating, “I have a dream that one day, on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit together…” This detailed imagery brought his message to …show more content…
They are very good with persuading others to follow their cause. Leaders may also use rational/ logical persuasion to influence others. People don’t always act logically so this is not always the best method. They also form relationships and create an environment where followers feel like a team. When leaders articulate common values effectively, their followers will coordinate and collaborate effectively. This leads to optimal performance levels. People feel motivated when they feel a part of something. When leaders encourage sharing ideas it also motivates followers, because they are more likely to participate is a plan they helped devise. Both leaders and managers should provide performance appraisals and feedback to let the leader’s followers and managers subordinates know how they are doing. Positive feedback can motivate an employee to keep up their good work and constructive feedback can help that employee to improve. It should be given directly following an accomplishment to ensure the desired behavior continues. There must also be goal commitment and a leader or manager who removes obstacles that hinder the achievement of a goal or task. An employee is more likely to reach for a goal they feel they can
