Lava Hospital Field Trip

Dear Dr. Anthony Davis,

The entire Eighth grade, including the teachers, has been thinking about going on a field trip to a very amazing and educational place. We have been thinking about going on a field trip to the Lava Beds National Monument, but to do this we would need your approval which I hope we will receive after I give you the in depth details of the educational values we would indulge in on this trip. On this field trip we would learn about the history of the formation of the lava beds, we would get to explore the caves and see how remarkable they are, and finally we would learn safety tactics for exploring underground caves.

The Lava Beds National Monument is a series of underground caves which are sometimes referred to as lava tubes that have formed over the course of history. These caves as stated in the paragraph,"Formed from a variety of volcanic eruptions that occurred over the last half million years." Just think of how many volcanic eruptions must have happened over the past half million years for as stated in the paragraph"700 caves" to form. Also another interesting fact about the Lava Beds National Monument is that "The majority of the landscape of Lava Beds National Monument was once covered with lava." This means that for a long period of time all of the beautiful underground caves that are available to be explored today were just covered up with sizzling hot lava. Now I do not know if I am speaking for my self here, but that is a huge amount of interesting history that I think a lot of kids would like to know about.

In one hike you can get it all: redwood groves, wildflower-filled meadows, rocky outcroppings, cascading creeks and sweeping views. This is Sonoma County at its best, the Pomo Canyon Trail, a 4.5-mile stretch between a wooded campground and Shell Beach. Naturally, unless you bring two cars, enjoying the entire trail would cause you to rack up nine miles. If you start at the Pomo Canyon Campground, you might have to add another mile, as when I hiked it, the campground was closed, and I do not know if it is permanent or seasonal.…

From this hiking experience, I learned the value of teamwork, effective communication, and what encompasses wholesome leadership as well as what can transpire when there is no leadership. As like all experiences, there are some parts I cherished and others not as much.…
