As individuals it can be easy to loose hope that our contribution toward progressing the stake of youth is failing, but this is not true. Policy and legislation is the means of a collective effort of individuals who care for the welfare of our youth, who historically have been voiceless. The San Francisco Youth Commission is a program puts the concerns of the youth into public policy application. Adults collaborate with young ones and form intergenerational public policy partnerships, mobilizing for civic rights at the national level; educational reform at the state level; and housing and environmental justice at the local level. Civically engaging the youth at the municipal level can increase their investment in their community, teach them democracy and enforce their agency for change in a healthy manner, as Victor Rios encourages, “ Embracing the positive aspects of resistance, teaching young people how to use it to navigate mainstream institutions…are endeavors we must take if we are to dismantle punitive social control and help young people who society has rendered as risks, threats, and criminals become productive citizens.” (Rios: 163) Policy can determine the necessary funds to support Latino families and cultural services and programs in schools that can help Latino’s the …show more content…
Growing up, I knew the feeling of the police presence on campus was unhealthy to a learning environment. I knew many of the Latino misfits who were pushed out by teachers, administrators and police because of fear, who felt disillusioned by the school system that stigmatized and contributed to delinquency. This course has taught me a lot about my surroundings and the disproportionate contact Latino youth make with the juvenile justice system but it also has given me hope. That hope is love. With all the madness going on in the world, the guises of racism, systematic oppression, there will always remain the loyal, the few whose love empowers them to empower others. Rudy from United Playaz told the class that will never leave me when he said, “Love is a verb, it’s an action.” (GS) It starts with an individual; his self is driven out of love to better his family, his community, and his own realities. We are all interconnected, support network if you will, and this why we need act in love in everything we do, building stronger families, being part of a harmonious community, and moving on to cement those changes in policy, so that our youth will thrive in the face of adversity, and end the cycle of
