There are number of potential key factors linked to the underutilization of mental health services. The lack of access to mental health services continues and it is the most serious problem within the Latino community. Numerous Latino families leave their country of origin, to find better opportunities in the United States since the opportunities for employment in their own country are scarce and the violence has made it unsafe to raise their families. As Latino immigrant families transition and adapt to the United States, or as second generation individuals try to embrace both cultures, they experience a range of adverse experiences. Some of the adverse experiences include substandard housing, abuse, trauma, stigma, discrimination, and poverty…

Speculating about causes can be interesting assignments to complete. This type of essay demands a structured format and thinking process. The essay I choose to write about, “Hispanic Pride vs. American Assimilation” by Stephanie Cox talks about an issue that is growing among Hispanic immigrants to choose not to learn English. Cox wants to learn and know more about the subject before she judges the decision. Why are they not making an effort to learn to speak English like all other immigrants do?…
Manifestaciones (Manifestations) Manifestaciones or short for Mani is a leadership retreat hosted by the Center for Latino Arts and Culture (CLAC) located on College Avenue. Although it is expected that this retreat is only for Latinos since it is hosted by the CLAC, anyone from any race can go because although the retreat is Latino-oriented it is not Latino exclusive. There is an application that every potential participant must fill out and the participants are chosen based on their responses on the application. Because of limited space, not everyone is allowed to go but I was fortunate enough to be chosen as one of the participants.…
When I was first introduced to Lambda Theta Phi Latino Fraternity Inc., certain aspects of the organization caught my attention. First and foremost, the organization promotes unity within the Latino community. Being united as Latinos is essential because together we acquire great accomplishments for the betterment of the community as well as ourselves. Moreover, being united provides the opportunity to demonstrate our capabilities as Latinos and break the barriers society has imposed upon us. For me, being able to interact with Latinos at UNCG, through this organization, and having the opportunity to meet individuals who demonstrate valuable character is of great importance.…
In Ray Suarez’s book entitled Latino Americans he shares the rich history of Latinos who helped to shape the United States. Latino Americans share the personal success and struggles of what it means to be an immigrant and the obstacles they have faced. The book offers a rich history of immigration and certainly reflects present day events of the United States. It tells the story of how people from different regions and continents across the globe came to be one.…
Discussion Culturally congruent interventions that are supported by evidence to aid Hispanics families in accessing health care include state and national policies. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is a national policy created to give Americans the opportunity to access affordable health care with limited discrimination (Shaw et al., 2014). It gives the Hispanic population a better chance in receiving health insurance coverage. A second policy, Building Strong Readers in Minnesota, is a state policy targeted at children in grades pre-kindergarten through 3rd grade. It makes sure that once children get to 3rd grade that they can read at the appropriate reading standard for the state (Lieberman, 2015).…
The Real Latino Life of the Ghetto Although the stories Diaz’s are fictionalized the experiences and circumstances he writes about are authentic. Latinos in neighborhoods all over the world experience the hardships and struggles that Diaz’s characters face in his stories. These characters, like real people are molded and impacted by the issues surrounding them. The dangers of the “mean” streets, the exposure to drugs, the everyday struggles of Latino families and the use of particular language in Diaz’s story prove the impact and authenticity of the events. Although Diaz himself may not endured all of the hardships he writes about, Latino teenagers all over the world in suburban and urban areas have and are currently experiencing circumstances…
3. The Best universities to attend if you are Hispanic 906 tikwiza All universities strive for diversity, but no one university fits every ethnic background. Hispanics, just like African Americans, are a minority group in the U.S. Some factors that Hispanics might consider when making a choice to go to a particular university are: Affordability Graduation rate of that particular ethnic group Hispanic friendly universities; and universities that strive to ensure protection of the rights of Hispanics and ensure they receive the same level of education as non-Hispanic students.…
With over 170,000 Hispanic people living in the Oklahoma City metro area, The University of Oklahoma’s Hispanic American Student Association (HASA) strives to welcome members of the community and spread their culture in the meantime (Living in Oklahoma City). The University of Oklahoma’s Hispanic American Student Association focuses on providing an environment in which students from an underrepresented group on campus can come together and share experiences. It also has formed a community in which students can ask for advice and guidance from other students, forming bonds through shared experiences. The organization hopes to expand Hispanic and Latino customs and traditions throughout the University of Oklahoma. (Hispanic American Student Association).…
The Latino/Hispanic population constitutes 17 percent of the national’s total population with more than 56 million Latinos living in the United States in 2015 (United States Census Bureau, 2015). Taking into consideration that Latinos are the largest ethnic/racial minority population in the United States, it is imperative that health care professionals be knowledgeable and capable of understanding Latino’s cultural belief and practices regarding health in order to provide optimal care. The incorporation of Latino cultural values and beliefs into the plan of care would positively influence patients’ outcomes and would enhance compliance with treatment in patients from this culture. The Latino population in the United States is divided into…
Through participation in a service that directly impacts the Latino community, I learned about Latino culture beyond a classroom setting. I provided my service at the Latin American Festival in Longs Park, Lancaster, PA on October 10, 2015. There were several activities that the coordinator had the group of volunteers do, such as help with children’s activities, parking duty, stage crew, information booth, program distribution, and the workshops. The activities that I had to do were to direct the performers to their dressing rooms and make sure no one enters the room as the performers get ready. Since the dressing rooms were right next to the bathrooms, I had to direct the public as to which doors were for the bathrooms to avoid confusion.…
Cultural activities provide an opportunity to reinforce the experiences, traditions, and beliefs of the Latino culture amongst Latinos and to introduce these ideas to people from other cultures. These activities serve as a mechanism to pass down traditions to generations to come and thus maintain the Latino culture. Two cultural activities that I have attended this semester that pertain to the Latino culture include the Midwest Association for Latin American Studies (MALAS) opening reception and the film screening of Chico y Rita. Participating in these activities allowed me to gain experience and knowledge of Latino culture, learn how the Latino culture is preserved, and relate it to the course material covered in Latino studies The first…
Alan Bialostozky Comm 100C Professor McMurria Spring 2015 Take home exam #3 Leo Chavez article “The Latino Treat Narrative” proposes a well-supported narrative to the nation’s anti-immigration discourse displayed by the media mostly in the USA. In this article, Chavez gives a critical overview and discussion about the images, stereotypes and falsified truths reproduced in society using and crafting recycled myths created by media experts, corrupt politicians, and people who openly hate immigrants from a Latino background. Chavez closely examines how “citizenship” has been seen and discussed through the legal organizations as a form of unity in the country through social and political participation. He claims that just critiquing discourse…
The Latino community has been generalized to seem as though access to proper mental healthcare has been a fault on their part, yet others argue that their approach to mental health may not be the only reason or a valid reason at all. Research has demonstrated that other factors have heavily contributed to the plight of a Latino’s mental well-being, instead. These factors vary across a spectrum for each Latino, such as whether or not they uphold cultural ideals; their background; their status; and their access to insurance or services. Attitudes from Latinos about mental health has been anticipated, for the stigma has come to exist claims that mental health is not considered as imperative as that of physical health. The stigma rose due to the…
