Language Sample Analysis Of Ling-Yu Guo And Sarita Eisenberg

Ling-Yu Guo and Sarita Eisenberg examined whether the outcome of language sample analysis in the total number of words (TNW), number of different words (NDW), and mean length of C-units in morphemes (MLCUm) differed in 1, 3, 7, 10, or 22 minute language samples. (Guo & Eisenberg, 2015, p.144) Children participating in this study were from the ages of 3;0 to 3;11. There were a total of 29 girls and 31 boys. Twenty-four of these children were from Buffalo, NY, while the rest were from Montclair, NJ. (Guo & Eisenberg, 2015, p. 144-145) All children were monolinguals and native speakers to Standard American English. The socioeconomic status of these children was based off of their mother’s education background. Sixty-seven percent of these mothers had a post-college degree, 20% of them had a college degree, while 13% of them had a high school degree. There was a racial/ethnic distribution between these children with 83% of them being Caucasian, 8% African-American, 7% Hispanic, and 2% Asian. Prior to the taking of language sample analysis, there were a couple of tests and screenings these children took. Children were administered the SPELT-P:2, the articulation subtest from the Fluharty-2, the Odd-Item-Out task of the RIST, and a hearing screening. Meanwhile, there didn’t seem to be a considerable difference between the standard sample and the shorter sample for the MLCUm. Although it was noted that to have a reliable result for the NDW and the MLCUm there should be a 10 minute sample, it was seen in the tables provided that the 7 minute sample was close to the standard sample. To show a consistent result for the TNW it was found that a 10 minute sample would get you reliable results as a 22 minute sample. (Guo & Eisenberg, 2015, p.
