Labor unions first emerged in the United States in the 19th century as a way for employees to fight for what they thought was right. These unions fought for high wages, reasonable working hours, and safer working conditions. Even today, two centuries later, it’s still being seen that these concerns are being focused on by employees and unions members throughout this country. Throughout time unions have shown their importance in all aspects of life, not just in the workplace. In the last few decades however, there has been an increase in companies and corporations suppressing the formation of labor unions in their businesses because they feel unions decrease production, give employees too much power, and ultimately decrease the profitability of the company. Unions do the complete opposite and allow businesses to grow over time. Corporations have been repeatedly fighting with unions; however, they should hear them out and allow them to form. Unions have won battle after battle to gain a fair workplace for all to work. For instance, workers have been given negotiating power and more of a voice to speak up against what they feel is wrong. According to a History Channel website article, Labor Movement, “the labor movement led efforts to stop child labor, give health benefits, and provide aid to workers who were injured or retired.” This is great for all involved, the employees and the business.
