The purpose of Kumru Toktamis article was to explain that there is a perceived opportunity by many actors along the Turkey and Iraq border. Who are all set out to achieve certain goals. Toktamis mentioned the goals of development, identity, and gaining territory (Toktamis 2009, 480). The previous mentioned goals were all in contingent to actions of many Kurdish and non-Kurdish actors in the region. Toktamis in his paragraph dedicated to this reason begins by telling the story of how for centuries the relationship between the two countries have been fluid and fragile solely because of past history and the wanting to control the territory. The fragile relationship is can also be contributed to the Kurdish people and their social and ethnic identity. Many actors whether economically, politically, and even military all want to have a claim in Kurdistan. As this territory became rich in resources, in particular oil, more and more outsiders began drastically destruct the region. Personally, I believe Toktamis achieved his goals was to explain that there is a perceived opportunity by many actors along the Turkey and Iraq border. He described the political actors, in this case Northern Iraq, Turkey, and the United States “in some sense” who are all set out to achieve certain goals. The mentioned the goals were of development, identity, and gaining territory. If I were looking to critique one aspect in his argument surrounding Kurdistan and how economic opportunities are being slowed down by political and economic actors is he could have provided more examples rather than just saying “US Military interference” or “Turkey willingly ignoring the lack of development in the country” there is more to the story than just those two main
