Brian Doyle sates, “A hummingbirds heart beats ten times a second. A hummingbirds heart is the size of a pencil eraser. A hummingbirds heart is a lot of the hummingbird,”(P. 29 lines 2-5). This section of the text was all about the hummingbirds heart. This heart is very unique because it is different from others, when it says the hummingbirds heart is most of the hummingbird, it means it covers a lot of the hummingbirds body, not everyones heart is a lot of the persons body at all. The hummingbird is also very unique because their hearts beat ten times a second. This is actually the fastest heart rate per second out of all the living beings on Earth. Also thinking about how small the heart is, one of the smallest in the world it beats pretty fast for such a small living creature. Brian Doyle says,“each one visits a thousand flowers a day. They can dive sixty miles an hour. They can fly backwards. They can fly more than five hundred miles without pausing to rest. But when they rest they come close to death: on frigid nights, or when they are starving, they retreat into torpor, their metabolic rate slowing to a fifteenth of their normal sleep rate, their hearts sludging nearly to a halt, barely beating, and …show more content…
It has many interesting features, it is also one of the biggest sea animals in the world. “The biggest heart in the world is inside the blue whale. It weighs more than seven tons. It’s as big as a room, with four chambers. When this creature is born it is twenty feet long and weighs four tons. It drinks a hundred gallons of milk from it’s mama every day and gains two hundred pounds a day and when it is seven or eight years old it endures an unimaginable puberty,” (Pg. 31 lines 61-63 & 68-73). This biggest heart in the world live inside the biggest body in the world, very different from the hummingbird. It’s amazing how it drinks so much milk a day and their different from humans when they go through puberty so early. There probably isn’t a lot of animals that weigh over seven tons and gaining two hundred pounds a day. These are many reasons to show that the blue whale is very different and unique from others. “There are perhaps ten thousand blue whales in the world, living in every ocean on earth, and of the largest mammal who ever lived we know nearly nothing. But we know this: the animals with the largest hearts in the world generally travel in pairs, and their penetrating moaning cries, their piercing yearning tongue, can be heard underwater for miles and miles,” (Pg. 32 lines 88-85). Ten thousand is a lot of big blue whales on earth, there probably aren’t that much animals that are as big and
