Whether it is a drama, poem, or short story, all literature that is written has a main idea, or theme. Sometimes, literature will have a common theme. Two poems with a similar theme about race are “La Migra” by Pat Mora and “Ballad of Birmingham” by Dudley Randall. A short story that focuses on the same theme is the short story “Big Black Good Man” by Richard Wright. These different poems and short stories share a similar theme of race which is a current theme that is happening in our society today.
With racial issues being a current theme of society, the first poem is “La Migra” by Pat Mora which is about two people playing a child’s game of cat and mouse. One person is a border patrol officer and the other person is a Mexican woman. The border patrol officer talks about violent things being done to the Mexican maid. Then they play the game in reverse. The poem starts from the perspective of the border patrol then transitions the second half of the poem to the Mexican lady. The mother tells the daughter “No, baby, no you may not go” instead the mother wants her daughter to go to the church where she will be safe. The mother discovers the church that the daughter went to has been bombed by a white supremacist terrorist group. With racial issues being a current theme of our society today, we are still fighting against racial terrorism. White supremacy groups are holding marches all around the country, and they are causing a disruption of peace to the surrounding communities.
