Jean Piaget theorized a model for Cognitive development. Before examining and describing my experiences from observing a class from Beverley Hills girls, a brief understanding of Jean Piaget?s theory on cognitive development must be made. Simply put, Piaget theorizes that children are prevented in learning certain concepts relative to their development stage (Woolfolk & Margetts, 2016, p. 80). Piaget argues that thought processes change over time, depending on certain factors and the stage of cognitive development a child has reached (Woolfolk & Margetts, 2016, pp. 81-82). Piaget models cognitive development into four stages;
Sensorimotor (0-2 years)
Preoperational (2-7 years)
Concrete operational (7-11 years)
Formal operational (11 years ? adult) (Woolfolk & Margetts, 2016, p. 83). …show more content…
stages of development is extremely important. It is important because his work has been used as a basis to design education programs around the world (Woolfolk & Margetts, 2016, p. 90). In Australia for example, many curriculum frameworks; ?promote an active constructivist, investigative approach that also involves age- or stage-related outcomes,? (Woolfolk & Margetts, 2016, p. 90). Essentially, Piaget emphasizes the importance of understanding how children think, which allows for more efficient teaching strategies to match children?s abilities (Woolfolk & Margetts, 2016, p. 90). Hattie corroborates the importance of cognitive development, as it influences the teaching strategies teachers use for lesson planning and states that is an integral factor for student achievement (Hattie, 2012, p.
