“The Scarlet Ibis” Siblings are the most annoying and loving people in our lives. My siblings are my greatest friends. Most of the time they make me mad, but no matter what, they always make me proud. My pride can get in the way though. In the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis”, by James Hurst, the main character, Brother, tries to help his brother, Doodle, in many ways. When pride came along, it gets in the way, and Brother accidently hurts his brother: the consequences are tragic. Although his past actions may seem otherwise, Brother is innocent His pride proved he loved his brother, as well as all the help he gave Doodle along the way. …show more content…
No, that is called jealousy. Jealousy is a feeling that one feels for someone they hate. Pride is a feeling someone feels towards someone they love. When Brother notices Doodle smiling for the first time, he joyfully shouts, “...Mama, he smiled. He’s all there! He’s all there!” (346). Why is Brother so excited over a smile? He is proud! His brother has accomplished something he thought he’d never be able to do. Brother wants Doodle to grow as much as he can, and here is a first step! This first step is a look into a bright future for his brother. This step is followed by many other steps leading to success. When Doodle finally stands on his own, after many fails, Brother is extremely happy. The text states, “...I grabbed him in my arms and hugged him, our laughter pealing through the air like a ringing bell.” (347). Brother wants so much for his brother to keeping growing, to go another mile, and here he is! Doodle has once again accomplished something others thought he’d never be able to do. Who wouldn’t be proud of their brother? Brother wanted his brother to grow, which means he loved his brother. If he hated him, he would have wanted the exact opposite, which is to see him fail. Brother was determined to keep his brother growing, so why would he kill Doodle when he was so proud of how far he had come? He
