Compare And Contrast The Scarlet Ibis And The Sniper

In the narrative The Sniper, which is written by Liam O'Flaherty, is about a war in which Republicans and Free state people are going into war. The sniper end up shooting an enemy from the other side and at the end he realizes he is his brother. Yet, in the narrative The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, is about an older brother that has a younger brother, Doodle, who cannot walk and the older brother tries to help him walk, but they have many difficulties on the way. Some things that both of the narratives have in common is war, brotherhood, and regret. In The Sniper, the war that is fought is the Civil War (of Ireland). In the text, it says, “Republicans and Free Staters were waging civil war.”. In The Scarlet Ibis the war, which is an internal war, is the faces that doodle has. Doodle cannot walk and his brother is embarrassed. “When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn’t walk, so I set out to teach him.”, said Doodles older brother. Doodle has many difficulties that he has to face and his brother wants to help him overcome some of his difficulties. …show more content…
For example, in The Sniper, the sniper had killed an enemy; at the end he felt bad he did so even if it was a good shot. What he did not know is that the enemy he had killed was his brother. “The sniper darted across the street. A machine gun tore up the ground around him with a hail of bullets, but he escaped. He threw himself face downward beside the corpse.” “The sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brothers face”. In The Scarlet Ibis, Doodle is the youngest brother and he has and older brother that teaches him how to walk. In the passage, it says ‘I'm trying to teach you how to walk.
