Treatment Device (IWTD).
“In addition to the purification requirements the IWTD must meet a demanding set of physical requirements to enable its use in the field. Technologies for IWTD must be lightweight (not to exceed 12oz.), easy to use/clean/maintain, low bulk/compact, and capable of producing purified water throughout an operational life of at least 135 liters.
They shall have an unused service life of 180 days, be storage stable for 5 years, and be environmentally-safe during use and subsequent disposal. They shall not be impacted by low temperature exposure/freezing and shall be fully functional on …show more content…
Processed water shall be palatable, with taste/flavor as in commercial bottled spring or municipal waters.”
Additional information derived from Table 3. Comparison of the performance specifications of commercially available individual seawater desalination products include

No specifications for dimensions, volume, water production, system recovery, salt rejection.
Desalination technology is not specified. Mode of use either continuous or batch is not specified. I am assuming that “purification requirements the IWTD” referenced above refers to filtration against water-borne pathogens such as in the protocol that addresses military water purification devices (NSF Protocol P248 Military Operations Microbiological Water
Purifiers). This needs to be clarified.
Does Increment 3: Desalination of sea and brackish waters need to consider TIC/TIM removal (Increment 2)?
The “Capability Production Document” may contain information directly applicable to the IWTD desalination requirements listed above.
