The author’s purpose may be to inform, to persuade, to express feelings, or to entertain. The author may write for more than one purpose. It is important to determine the author’s purpose in order. Knowing why a text was written, helps the reader in understanding the plot and theme(s) within.
Today's lesson objectives are: Students will be able to determine an author's purpose in a text and students will be able to explain how an author's purpose is conveyed through the text.

Dialogue is the conversation between characters in a story. Lois Lowry uses a lot of dialogue in her story. Why would the author include dialogue in the story?
Dialogue helps move a story forward in an organized and straightforward manner. Characters can develop through dialogue and go through some sort of change. By understanding the main character, their thoughts, feelings and actions, the reader can better grasp the theme of the story. A story's theme is its idea or point. The theme of a fable is its moral and the theme of a short story is its inferred message. The theme can be considered the big idea. It is a belief about life that the author is trying to express to the reader. There may be many themes and it is not just one word, but rather a statement or sentence.
Not only does a story have a purpose and the sentences and word choice have a purpose, but so do each paragraph, each piece of dialogue, each scene, and each chapter.
