It is an Island that is separated from Great Britain by the Irish Sea. The country is divided between Ireland and Northern Ireland, which belongs to the United Kingdom. The largest river in Ireland is the River Shannon. Ireland is also known as the Emerald Isle, because of its vast hills and plains of green. The climate consists of mild winters, cool summers and consistently humid with overcast about half of the year. The natural resources of the country include natural gas, copper, lead, zinc, silver and limestone. 66.1% of the land in Ireland is used for agriculture. The majority of the population is located on the east side of Ireland because it is where all the main cities are including the capital of Dublin. The Supreme Commander is the President Michael D. Higgins. Minister of Defence is Leo Varadkar and the Chief of Staff is Vice Admiral Mark Mellett. There are three service branches which are Irish Army, Irish Air Corps and the Naval Service. There are also a Reserve Defence Force. The military age for enlistment is 18-24 years of age and 27 for the naval service. There is currently 9,137 active personnel and 2,323 Reserve personnel. Their budget for fiscal year 2018 is €946 million. Ireland has a strict policy of non-belligerence in conflicts with the world and claimed neutrality during World War II. The military is highly involved with United Nations peacekeeping operations. Even though the country is quiet in terms of involvement they are always ready to defend their country in case of an attack. The Defence Forces originated in 1913 and originally called the Irish Volunteers. They formed an alliance with the First Dail which was the parliament of the revolutionary Irish Republic and it was known at this time they became the Irish Republican Army (Defence Forces History, 2018) In 1919 they waged war against the British rule in Ireland which is known today as the War of Independence.
