Although these devices have become more energy efficient since the internet’s release, consumers frequently replace these devices in order to accommodate the ever changing nature of the internet (such as larger file sizes). Dangerous computer components such as the lithium ion batteries found in laptops, are piling up in landfills across the globe. Furthermore, the internet requires a lot of electricity in order to properly function. The data centers filled with energy consuming servers paired with the billions of individuals whom use the internet equates to a large amount of power that is consumed each day (Adamson, 2005). Since electricity still mostly derives from the burning of resources such a coal, environmentally unfriendly emissions are released into the atmosphere as a result of the globes heavy use of the internet. On the positive side however, the internet reduces a lot of travel and promotes awareness for the preservation of the environment. Since meetings can now take place over online services, employees of corporations can avoid having to drive or even fly to an important event. The introduction of email and texting services reduces the need for written letters requiring transportation. Additionally, the resources provided online provide individuals with more awareness and tips for promoting and protecting the environment (Nalewajek et al. 2013). Furthermore, due to the communication that the internet technology provides, the work done by scientists in an attempt to save our environment can be effectively communicated across the globe and expanded upon by other individuals more
