While others like Orenstein, saw people attempting suicide. He proclaimed, “They used to cut their veins actually against the locks of the wagon doors or they used to bite with their teeth the arteries on their arm in order to bring the bit of life that was left in them to an end.” This may sound deranged, but they wanted to end their own life since they knew their fate. They knew even if they survived the Holocaust their past would still haunt them everyday. Orenstein recalls that he will never forget want this thirty year old Jewish Man said in the train, “Well, we Jews don't commit suicide. We Jews have now been committed, of course, to death, but if we go to death, let's do it actually, "Shem Shamayim", let's do it with "kavod", to show the world, the other people, the Germans, that we are not afraid of
