In the Bread Givers the Smolinsky family is a very traditional Jewish family who came over to America from Russia so the father, Reb could escape the war. The novel is about the youngest child, Sara Smolinsky, running away from the family and making her own way through school and becoming a school teacher. She does and eventually goes back to take care of her ill father, Reb, who still believes in the traditions of the old country that Sara gave up to make her own decisions as well as a better life for herself. They came over from Russia to get away from the war and were always trying to make a better life for themselves, but could never really stay afloat because Reb did not work and was used to the women taking care of him.
