It forces us to think beyond the television, internet, and our personal experiences. We have to acknowledge racism, sexism, and classism exist. That acknowledgement requires us to create an environment that is comfortable for everyone to feel included no mater ethnicity, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, and class. It holds us accountable for our actions. We can’t teach our children based on our point of view/experiences (single story) solely. We have to be open to learning and adjusting our teaching styles accordingly, and it intern creates a genuine relationship with your students (Chinn & Gollnick, 2013). I would like to greet all of my students with a smile before the day starts modeling C3 Greensboro. We discussed in class the impact a simple greeting in the morning could do, and it meant the world to me during this experience. I want my students to know this is a safe place, and even if they are leery in the beginning that my passion for teaching and my love for their success over shadows their doubt. I hope like me, they will begin to open up and be themselves, so that they too can enjoy the class. I also learned that even when you truly try not to form an opinion before trying something is hard, and you may not be perfect every time.
