While attending the Fresno Art Museum I came across a specific piece by Hung Liu, titled Huang-Jun: Imperial Warriors drawn in a oil canvas in 2001. This painting depicts a group of possibly Chinese soldiers. The group of soldiers seem to be part of the medical staff during a time of war since they’re all wearing red crosses on their chests and the background of the image seems harsh. Hung Liu is no strange to drawing paintings related to this subject since she is known for drawing about things related to life and war is certainly something related to life. Hang Liu was probably influenced to paint in this form because she lived through many hardships related to her themes as a young child in China. Throughout the painting Huang-Jun: Imperial Warriors by Hung Liu there is a ton of symbolism that gives meaning to this painting. The warriors in the painting are without a doubt from part of a medical team and in this painting Liu gave lots of glory to them. Hung Liu portrayed this medical team as a sign of hope and life that is of great importance in war. Hung Liu did this by making sure to include a peacock and butterfly within her painting. In many cultures both of these animals are symbolically interpreted as a sign of immorality, the soul, life and hope. All of those symbols give lots of glory to the medical team. Since, in war the medical team is seen as life since they save countless amount of souls. This image depicts the key, undervalued role that the medical team plays in time of war since they’re a beacon of life and help save countless souls. My interpretation also corresponds well with Hung Liu overall theme in her paintings because her paintings mostly relate to life. Hung Liu was very wise in choosing the color and texture in this painting. The contrast within the painting was brilliant as well. Liu choose to use dark colors such as brown and grey when drawing the soldiers, this helped bring a depressing mood and immediately helped the observer identify that they were in a time of a war. But when drawing things that symbolize life, hope, the soul and such she used very vibrant colors that contrasted the negativity of the war. Such as the red cross, the blue butterfly and the colorful peacock all this helped the viewer focus on the meaning behind her painting. The sheer size of the painting also contributed to its greatness since it allowed you to carefully and detaily analyze the painting.
