Societal culture is a common language, belief system, ethic heritage, and history of a group of people (House, Hanges, Ruiz-Quintanilla, Dorfman, Javidan, Dickson, et al, 1999). Organizational culture is a commonly shared language, values, and history shared by members of an organization. (House, Hanges, Ruiz-Quintanilla, Dorfman, Javidan, Dickson, et al, 1999) Organizational leadership is defined as “ the ability of an individual to influence, motive, an enable others to contribute toward the effectiveness and success of the organization of which they are members” (House, Hanges, Ruiz-Quintanilla, Dorfman, Javidan, Dickson, et al, p. 11,1999). The major goal was to develop a theory centered on the impact culture plays on leadership, organizational culture and to what extent they are effective. There were four major phases of the GLOBE project: phase one develop a instrument that measures societal and organizational culture and leader attributes that can be used across cultures; phase 2 assess nine dimension to societal and organizational culture measured against cultural-level implicit theories of leadership; phase 3 will examine culturally specific organizational and leadership practices; phase four using laboratory experiments will seek to confirm and extend the pervious …show more content…
This was perhaps one of the largest studies conducted with over 170 contributors spanning over 60 cultures. While a large study there were a lot of hypotheses. The authors outlined each hypotheses well, however the large amount of them made it a challenging to understand exactly what the study was seeking to determine. A limitation in the study was the sample size used. The authors list this as a point to consider. Over 17,000 middle mangers were the subjects of the study, while this is a large sample with representation from over 60 nations; the study was conducted within a culture of it own, a middle managers culture. The authors cite this in the text as a point for the reader to keep in mind that while the study is comprehensive, it is still centered on a particular culture.
