Immigration Enriching America America is a nation comprised of immigrants and it is the country's greatest strength. The vast majority of the population is three or four generations removed from an immigrant descendant. Immigrants migrated to America with their skills, innovative ideas, and conceptualized the great American dream that exists today. They settled and created a better life for themselves and future generations, whereby, making monumental contributions to the nation. Government and education were formed, transportation routes constructed, farming techniques were utilized and industrialism was born. Immigrants are disproportionately represented in such high-skilled fields as medicine, technology and science related fields, but also in lower-skilled fields such as restaurants, domestic service, and construction. Immigrants are not a financial drain on the government and the net monetary benefit of immigration to the U.S. is almost ten billion dollars annually, furthermore, immigrants tend to migrate during prime working years and will make substantial contibutions to Income Tax and Social Security whereas the U.S. is not obligated invest in their educational expenses. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the percentage of the population that is foreign born is approximately 12.5%, whereas, in the early 20th century, it was approximately 15%, furthermore, The current migration influx is not out of proportion to historical levels. Immigration in the last decade has averaged about 1 million per year, it sounds high in actual numbers, but at the rate of 4 immigrants per year per 1,000 U.S. residents is less than half the rate during the Great Migration of 1890-1914. Immigrants have significating enriched America, whereas, being an integral part in helping America intellectually, to be able to compete globally. In order for America to remain a "Super Power" we must be able to attract and keep the brightest minds in the world. There
