While I don’t encourage entering the US illegally, I praise everyone who has the courage to travel thousands of miles to La Posada knowing the obstacles they must overcome to survive the journey. Imagining myself in Saraa’s shoes as she gave us a glimpse of the life she left behind, I am overcome by her strength. Expecting a baby while her husband is detained in another city, learning of her youngest sisters passing back home and not knowing what your future holds is heartbreaking. In the time it took me to read this article, over two hundred migrants were detained, some of which were glad to be caught given the deadly conditions. This gives the illusion the system is working, however detaining people until they are denied or granted a visa is absurd.
