Managing Resources. Care Delivery Model.
Identify the nursing care delivery model in this case study and describe its effectiveness. The nursing care delivery model identified in this case study is the primary nursing hybrid: patient-focused in the emergency department (ED), maternity unit and medical-surgical units (non ICU or intensive care units); because in these units the registered nurses (RNs) are the patient’s primary nurses from admission to discharge paired or assisted with unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) who provide patient-side care (take vital signs, assist with bath and toileting needs, answer call lights and deliver trays among other assigned care activities) according to their scope of practice. The typical patients being served in Metropolitan Hospital vary from one unit to another. ED (a Level I Trauma center) sees an average of 175 patients per day divided in three main groups: adults, pediatrics and psychiatric patients. Maternity unit which uses a labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum approach (LDRP) has an average birth rate of 250 babies per month. While on medical-surgical and mental health in-patient units the average census is twenty patients (Case Study. Care Delivery Model, 2016).
Is the identified nursing care model the best model for this patient population? Describe why or why not. If different model is better, describe the rationale for the alternative model. As a secondary outcome, these improvements appeared to be associated with an increased safety on the units evidenced by reduction in incidents of seclusion. They concluded that patient-focused (primary nursing hybrid or nursing case manager) care delivery models improve safety and can enhance the staff’s attention to work (Clinical Accountability) with clients in their recovery. Furthermore, the role of the advanced practice nurse can influence the recovery of the psychiatric patients. (Morris, Caldwell, & Mencher, 2010)
