1. Describe at least eight signs that indicate a child or elderly person may be abused. There are several different types of abuse: physical, sexual, emotional/psychological, neglect, abandonment, financial/material, and self-neglect. Some signs can be clearly seen physically for example some sorts of wounds. “Bruises, black eyes, welts, laceration, and rope marks” (Pozgar, 2016, pg. 425), which is an act of physical abuse and maiming of another. There are also more signs of physical abuse the possibilities of bone fractures or broken bones, open wounds or cuts, internal injuries (such as dislocations and sprains), and any sort of subjection to punishment. As for signs of sexual abuse, it may contain some signs of physical abuse with bruising, as well as, torn or bloody clothing and unexplained venereal diseases. Emotional or psychological can be depicted through “being emotionally upset or agitated; being extremely withdrawn and noncommunicative or nonresponsive; unusual behavior usually attributed to dementia” (Pozgar, 2016, pg. 425). Neglect and self-neglect have similar signs they could include “dehydration, malnutrition, untreated bedsores, and poor personal hygiene; unattended or untreated health problems; hazardous or unsafe living condition/arrangements (e.g., improper wiring, no heat, or no running water); unsanitary and unclean living conditions” (Pozgar, 2016, pg. 425-426).
