Propaganda was vital in the Spanish Civil War due to the ‘Non-Intervention Act’. Neruda’s I’m Explaining a Few Things is ‘delivered with the conscious intent of manipulation.’ With the resolve of political bias, Neruda uses evocative language to describe the devastation the war has wrecked upon Spain.
Neruda intended I’m Explaining a Few Things to have an effect upon people and their opinion of the war. Neruda claims “I’ll tell you all the news” proving that not only is this a political piece but also that Neruda believes it is factual as well. Being a political representative for Chile in Spain in the 1930s, he had a direct experience of the Spanish Civil War. In the poem, Neruda calls out to his dead friends;
‘Remember, Raul?
Eh, Rafel? Federico,’ and is answered with silence. As well as a piece of writing demanding action, it is a memorial to the deaths of the people Neruda lost. He ‘seeks to retain their voice and their struggle’ and not allow their deaths to be forgotten. As a memorial to the dead, it is a piece written in support for the dead and thanking them for the sacrifice they gave. As a political poem, the death of poets who died from the war emphasises that there were innocent deaths and losses; not just ones on the front line.
Thus, I’m Explaining a Few Things is a political poem, written in support of the Republicans and to raise awareness for their fight against the Nationalists. The poem is simply propaganda.
