Humans Rethink What Are The Positive Effects Of Prosthetics

Recent advances in human bionics have made humans rethink what it actually means to be human. With recent technology including prosthetics, i-limbs and even artificial organs the line has crossed between human and machine. There are many positives and negatives to the development of these new machines that include allowing people to walk and hear again to the negative effects that include bionics that need batteries are very expensive and do not last very long. One positive effect of human bionics is the development of prosthetics. Prosthetics allow those with amputation to do things they could do when they had all of their limbs, whether that be to walk again to use their fingers again or to run and play sports. With the help of a small implant in your brain new prosthetics allow you to move the prosthetic fingers and control its grip strength. “And an experimental implant that wires the brain to a computer holds the promise of giving quadriplegics control over artificial limbs” (Smithsonian.com). In order for a prosthetic to move they must have one or more batteries in them, depending on how big or little the prosthetic is. If the patient wants individual items to move, such as the fingers of a prosthetic they would have to buy even more batteries, and that means even more money spent. “The disadvantages of this technology are that the battery and motor inside it makes it heavy, it’s expensive, and there’s a slight time delay between the user sending a command and the computer processing that command and turning it into action” (Bionic Limbs). These limbs are very helpful when you have a battery and they work, but when the battery life runs out some people might not have enough money to buy a new one.
