During my leadership rotation, I observed, shadowed, and interviewed Lorraine Leach, charge nurse of the 4 North Telemetry Unit at Saint Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne. Leach has over forty years nursing experience and has had the opportunity to work in various health care settings on multiple units. In terms of the telemetry unit at Saint Joseph (St. Joe) hospital, Leach is in charge of overseeing patient care of all the 31 beds on the unit. On most days, all 31 beds are filled with patients suffering from heart disease with complicating conditions and/or patients with moderate to severe illnesses that needs constant assessment and evaluation. As the emergency department is always admitting new patients, it is rare that all 31 beds are not…
Nurses often face challenges known as ethical dilemmas, which may impact them and their patients. An ethical dilemma is a situation in which an individual is required to determine the best decision between two moral actions. Beneficence requires health care worker to act in patients’ best interest, as well as, avoiding harm towards the patient.…

The author uses this duty against health care workers implying that if health care workers do not receive the influenza vaccination after knowing all the facts and advantages, they are breaking their moral duty. This once again plays on the emotions and feelings toward the health care workers’ profession. Lead or Lambast This principle claims that health care systems should take action and require all health care workers to receive the vaccine, or face backlash from the media and society.…
This theory is particular in its assertion that when facing ethical dilemmas duties and obligations should be followed. It usually places its focus on the requirements of the profession like obligations and rules. To inspire ethics, following these obligations and rules is a necessity in deontology as this is depicted as ethical acting. On its own, the Deontological theory cannot be strictly applied in the nursing world, as it does not incorporate human intelligence. I found the utilitarian theory unfavorable to health care as it solely relies on consequences rather than actions.…
Character, Choices, and Community Dr. Marie T. Hilliard, a retired Kernel in the army and a member of Malta, expresses concern over ethical advances. We, the people, are subjected to ethical questioning when put into certain circumstances. Dr. Hilliard stated three scenarios that are called in at Malta repeatedly. As a concern citizen, she expresses her thoughts and concerns of people who have to deal with ethical events. The first scenario is of an “ob-gyn- service, Jordan, a lesbian nurse “gay” gene basis for mom to choose abortion of unborn daughter.”…
Despite the negative consequences Kant urges everyone to take on these two roles in order to encourage good intentions and good people thereby. As a nurse Miss Evers not only has the duty to care for her patients but more importantly she has the responsibility to protect their rights and to stand up for their interests at all times. Her universal duty, outside her nursing role is to be kind to people and to respect their rights as a person. To some extent Miss Evers does care for and is very sympathetic towards her patients but she fails to fulfill her roles entirely because she makes decisions based on her emotions and not her intellect. When making decisions based on our emotions, we often tend to do what we ‘want’ and not necessarily what we…

Moral dilemmas are not excluded and represent difficult conversations between nurses, patients and their families. According to philosophical Universalist theories, Deontologists state that actions are either right or wrong based on their right making despite of the consequences of such actions; in contrast, Utilitarianism highlights the outcome of actions for the greatest number, rather than intrinsic motives. Nevertheless, morality could overcome cultural norms by having a positive and active doing to help patients, or a negative avoiding doing equal to omission. Consequently, nurses encounter difficult experience when providing care to patients who might be terminally ill.…

In Rebecca Skloot’s book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, the author reveals a real-life story about the life of Henrietta Lacks. Henrietta Lacks was an African American woman who was diagnosed with a fast-growing cervical cancer at a very young age. The cells retrieved from her cervical tumor, later termed “HeLa”, became the first immortal cell that could survive in the lab and replicate continuously without dying. These cells later became key components to the development of many groundbreaking inventions such as the polio vaccine and in vitro fertilization. The purpose of this paper is to examine the social covenant of nursing in relation to the ethical dilemmas.…
Yet, despite its influence, Kantian ethics seems to have several weaknesses. First, since people are emotional beings, reason and rationality is usually not enough to motivate them act morally. Another weakness is that Kant’s categorical imperative allows for much mistreatment of animals that should not be considered morally right. Therefore, although Kantian ethics provides many strong arguments, one should always critically evaluate the ideas that are presented, especially when it deals with such a subtle and controversial issue as…
Nurses play a central role in advocating for their patients. In the case of Freda, the moral conflict between the nurse and physician revolves around the implementation of a feeding tube, in which the nurses feel does not respect Freda’s wishes. In utilitarianism, the beneficence principle means the value of the good (Collier & Haliburton, 2015, p. 440). In Freda’s case she defines good as dying peacefully. In Kantianism, the principle of autonomy states that the competent individual has the right to be self-determining (Collier & Haliburton, 2015, p. 440).…
