Leadership is about change and changing the way an organization operates is one of the toughest things aspects of any leadership position. The best tool for leaders of change is to understand the predictable, universal sources of resistance in each situation and then strategize around them.1 Smart leaders invite others into the planning and allow those affected by change to make choices. A leader, must identify the problem, choose the best method for change, develop an alternative solution to the problem, implement the selected alternative, and finally evaluate the decision outcome. Post implementation evaluation determines whether the problem has been fixed as a result of the changes and where gaps still may lay.
Some long time employees who are quality employees, might have seen previous initiatives fail, or that have produced few meaningful results will be more resistant to change and those experiences might have left them frustrated or disillusioned with the process and don’t want to go through it again. These employees are concerned about competency, loss of control and fear of more work. Change interferes with autonomy and can make people feel that they’ve lost control over their territory.1 People resist change often because of self-preservation.
