How Does Sonya Build Suspense

Through the comedy the director used many elements to control the audience. The scene was set in an old farm house which is very relatable to the watching audience. The lighting was not too bright nor too dark and was to the perfect setting to where the entire set was lit up without the spectators being in the lime light. The costumes they were in were very modest and not over the top. The characters were very easy to distinguish because of the minimum wardrobe changes. In the comedy, you could tell the rich from the poor by their clothes. Masha was dressed very sharply in black and white, while Sonya and Vanya were dressed in muted tones that showed their money status. In Spike’s experience, his lack of clothes showed that he did not have high morals and that he is vain. In the middle of the story when they all went to the party, Masha made Nina go as one of her elves and not as a princess as she wanted therefore, showing that Nina was nothing to her. It was a very short comedy in a way that the whole story took place within forty eight hours. During the story, it focused on multiple characters. Firstly, Sonya was the main point of focus when she did not make good coffee for Vanya and she threw her coffee cup on the floor. Secondly, there was Cassandra when she came in to say her daily ‘good morning’ with a prophecy that would make Sonya and Vanya very concerned for her health. Thirdly, Masha came home and talked about herself and her many accomplishments. Then, Spike had to recite his monologue for the part he tried out for but did not get the part. Finally, the last main person the director focused on was Vanya. He showed his play to Nina and his siblings to prove that he can do something valuable.
