How Does HIIT Affect Weight Loss?

ABSTRACT? As the rate of obesity in the US increases, the need for a practicable, healthy way of life is becoming more and more important. Exercise is often thought of as the key to weight loss. However, many overweight individuals don’t have the motivation or time to go biking or running for an hour every day. To overcome this problem and to help make exercise more manageable, high interval intensity exercise (HIIE) can be a practical solution. HIIE is an exercise strategy that prescribes short periods of intense exercise alternating with less intense recovery periods. Exercising for 20 minutes or less is something that more individuals are likely to be able to do on a daily basis.

The purpose of this review is to examine the effects of HIIT on weight loss according to the current literature. If HIIT proves to be as effective as moderate intensity continuous exercise (exercise for longer periods of time at a lower intensity), it may be something that could be implemented into more weight loss programs.
Methods
This comprehensive review is based on critical analysis of literature obtained using the Touro College Online library and Google Scholar.
