Trotsky was an amazing mastermind and organised everything to perfection, He created the Red Army; discipline and order was a main advantage in the success of the Reds, especially proved as any sign of cowardice meant execution. This was completely what the Whites lacked, some of the divisions did have experienced military commanders, but the other, who were a large majority, were anti-bolshevik farmers in numbers of 10’s, who were powerless against the Cheka.

The whites did not form a united anti-Bolshevik front allowing the Reds to pick off the whites armies separately and easily, without much resistance. Other major factors such as geographical advantages of the Reds, such as control of railways and factories meant they could move quickly and freely if there was any problem in the countryside with the whites, and so launch surprise attacks on small anti-bolshevik movements.
