Throughout the book Grendel by John Gardner, the character of Grendel changes drastically throughout the course of the book. Three characters that really had an impact on Grendel's personality throughout the book are, the Dragon, Grendel's mother, and the Shaper. To begin with the Dragon impacted Grendel's life because he was like his mentor that guided him. For example, in the books it states, “ The dragon smiled, seemed almost friendly for an instance. “ You've been very attentive and had thoughtful,” he said,” all things considered…”Thank you” I said, as heartily as i could manage.” (Gardener 65). Grendel starts feeling like the dragon might not be so intimidating and he might be able to help Grendel. Throughout the book it shows how slowly Grendel's mother is there less and less for him. Like the time where Grendel is being attacked by the bull and he keeps calling out for his mother but she does not go to his aid like previous times. Grendel states in the book, “Please Mama!” I sobbed as if heartbroken. “Then some thirty feet away, there was a bull. He stood looking at me with his head lowered” (Gardner 19). Grendel also experiences his mother going though an evil phase at the beginning of the story, where she is rude to him at times, something he hadn't experienced before and could have had an impact on his personality.
