Federation is the states joining together to become one. At first Australia was just colonies. In 1888 Australia became a nation but not everyone wanted federation. In the 1890's the Australian constition was drafted at a series of constitution conventions
How did Australia become a nation? In Australia at first there was six colonies but after a while people started think about federation. Some colonies thought it was a great idea but other colonies weren't to exited. For example New South Wales. Some people in New south Wales said yes when they voted for Australia to become a nation. Many people stood up for federation but one of the main people was henry Parkes. People believed that if all six colonies became a nation things would be easier to deal with. Henry used his public speaking ability's to get the news out about federation. Soon it was in the newspapers as well. On the 24th of October 1889 sir Henry Parkes said his famous speech at Tenterfield school of arts about federation.
Why did some people want Australia to become a nation? People wanted Australia to become a nation because people were thinking that if France or Germany decided to attack we would have more defense as one country. Another argument was if we became a nation people wouldn't have to cross borders and tell the people what they were doing. So If Australia became a nation we wouldn't have to deal with these problems.
How did the states over come there jealousy? New South Wales and Victoria both were fighting because they both wanted to be the capital of Australia. But instead of going with Victoria or New south wales they decided to go with a new place. It was soon decided that the capitol of Australia would be called Cambera.
