Depression is a mood disorder that affects how one feels, thinks, and handles numerous activities in their daily life (NIH, 2016). Depression was first recognized as a disorder called melancholia. This was during the second millennium B.C., when “all mental illnesses were attributed to demonic possession, and were attended to by priests” (Nemade,Reiss, Dombeck, 2007). It was more of a spiritual or mental illness rather than a physical one. However, Hippocrates, a Greek physician was the first to suggest that depression may be linked to balanced or imbalanced body fluids. Depression is a common disorder among normal citizens and even celebrities. For example, Demi Lovato is one individual that has checked into facilities to receive emotional and physical therapy in order to cope with depression. Today, more than 3 million cases a year are treated between the ages of three and sixty. Depression is a disorder that has been around for a long time and its treatment is progressively changing.
An individual with depression may experience different symptoms and develop diseases accordingly with their symptoms. Depression is also compared to an anxiety disorder because they have common symptoms and treatment. Although symptoms vary with the intensity of depression some common ones are discontent, anxiety, excessive hunger, irritability, suicidal thoughts, weight gain or loss and guilt.
