Children begin making sense of the print surrounding them starting in early-childhood, wherein they identify text in the form of books, television or environmental print like road-signage. These early years are crucially important to shaping emerging readers and writers, and in the ethnically-diverse classroom, teachers should be aware of the likelihood that some students will possess vastly different understandings of communication and language. However, through being culturally-aware, and working to bridge any disconnect between student and school, teachers can alleviate these troubles. Emergent literacy is a continuous process of learning and increasingly complex language acquisition that is facilitated through the use of teacher-directed activities such as reviewing the alphabet, participating in read-alouds, and purposeful independent practice.

In their first years of life, children will likely be exposed to print in the form of books, television and signage that begin to develop their language-awareness. These experiences effectively build the foundations of their emergence as readers and writers in the classroom. Heath, in her 1983 ethnographic study of two geographically close but sociologically different communities, demonstrated that families who regularly engaged their children with print had those children achieve a much higher rate of literacy than those who did not.
