Horkheimer and Adorno argue that culture originated based upon what was popular or in demand at the present time. This has now become a foundation for the argument that the system should remain the same. In defense of a system which works, they state, “[f]urthermore, it is claimed that standards were based in the first place on consumers’ needs, and for that reason were accepted with so little resistance” (1242).
