Krasnow has worked with many students who have social anxiety. He gave this presentation in order for students to understand that shyness and anxiety is not a bad thing. He wanted us to be aware of what social anxiety was and how to combat it. Another issue he was passionate about was labeling: he did not want people with social anxiety disorder to feel like they were placed in a box in which their disorder defined who they are. Krasnow, at the end of his lecture, went through one procedure he used in treating social anxiety disorder. He had one student he was counseling slowly try out new social experiences. After a period of time, he had the student face her anxiety head on and do something that she wouldn’t have done just a few months prior to this time. This process of slowly facing the problem is another topic we covered in psychology. In class, we learned that treatment of various disorders has evolved over many years. The most successful treatments were ones in which the subject would slowly acclimate to stressful or disorder-causing situations. So it makes sense that Dr. Krasnow’s strategy was successful, because he didn’t immediately force the student into a social
