This article we read(Our Mutual Joy: The Religious Case For Gay Marriage) by Lisa Miller (569-576). Whether it be political or personal, Millers purposes are very one sided about the many arguments she shows us throughout her article. That is how most writings should be, the article makes readers really think about each issue at hand and what the article entails. What is your take on the subject, how does reading this impact your own views?…
In the Bible, homosexuality is not an acceptable sexual orientation. It is a sin – a deformity. In the novel, any diversions from hetero relationships are kept between the lines. The reader explores sexuality as the characters do. Each character shows a different relationship to sex.…
In this paper, I wanted to review "Things Fearful to Name": Bestiality in Colonial America by John M. Murrin. Bestiality was a person who had the sex relationship with animals. When the bestiality occurred, people decided to make prosecution by using the law. In the society, laws could help people to prevent the wrong thing occurred and warned all people to act correctly. From this article, I understood people's attitude on the bestiality and sodomy during the colonial period.…
Even at the time of Matthew’s death, some still showed their hostility and disapproval towards homosexuality. For the most part, the religion followers refused to accept homosexuality because it was viewed as a sin. Reverend Fred Phelps of the Baptist Church in particular stayed homophobic and did not change his perspective even after Mathew’s brutal attack. Phelps made efforts to prove that God supposedly does not accept homosexuals and homosexuality is a sin according to the Bible. Nearly all who despised gays, naturally followed beliefs taken from the Bible allegedly condemning gays.…
Sexual orientation has been a heavily disputed topic for decades. At first no one really cared, but the more it was put out there the more it became evident that this couldn’t be ignored. It wasn’t until June 26, 2013 that gay marriage accepted in all fifty states. It is gradually becoming more widely accepted, but there are still large groups out there that do not support it. In Sager’s article Refuting Anti-Gay Rights Arguments, we see that he has a much stronger source because he comes back with textual evidence, while Dawson’s article Bisexuality is a real Thing, is much weaker because it is based off her opinion.…
Christians use these texts to apply a universal moral that declares same-sex relationships as Biblically unethical. However, by looking into the specific historical situation in which the text was written, one can find various social and political factors that underline the formation of these passages. Specifically, the factors lead to the belief that these rules were…
Growing up in the latter part of Sullivan’s generation, I can relate to and agree to the majority of his perspectives of what is a homosexual. None the less, I can also relate to the evolving perspectives of homosexuality in today’s generation. Raising a homosexual child in today’s society has provided me with an updated insight into the ever changing homosexual culture. The combination of my experiences, as well as the accompanied sources, has provided me with an understanding of both perspectives represented within the materials. In relation to Sullivan’s excerpt, What is a Homosexual, I was able to make a connection to the topics of nature versus nature as well as how individuals learn to come to terms at a young age with their homosexuality.…
Recently my two classmates have shared their opinions on two speeches titled Gay marriage in America and Georgia tech freshman convocation speech. My first classmate has given preference to the second speech. It seems that he is more inclined to Shelby as a person with charisma who is capable to attract attention but not to the content of his speech. Thus, Shelby, as a college student (ethos), tells very emotionally about the major things which every student of his college must know. He actively uses tone and gestures to express his thoughts and make the audience believe what he says.…
In Jesus, the Bible, and Homosexuality the author, Jack Rogers, Professor of Theology Emeritus at San Francisco Theological Seminary, argues that when people oppose homosexuality in the modern world their reasons can be categorized into one of three points of view. He goes on to explain these three points of view saying, “1) The Bible records God’s judgement against the sin of homosexuality from its first mention in the Scripture. 2) People who are homosexual are somehow inferior in moral character and incapable of rising to the level of full heterosexual ‘Christian civilization’. And 3) People who are homosexual are willfully sinful” (Rogers 33).…
homosexuals and others who do not obey the laws of Nature and God should be "deprived of the sign of love." While opposition and persecution where the principle themes of the treatment of homosexuality during the Middle Ages, the scholarly rationale for this opposition was widely varied. In his eleventh-century book Liber Gomorrhianus, or the Book of Gommorah, Benedictine monk and Cardinal Peter Damian presents perhaps one of the severe persecutions of homosexuality. While Aquinas' acknowledges that, while still sinful, homosexuality is not the worst sin of lust, Damian presents such acts as the epitome of wickedness.…
The Gentiles were also guilty of substituting natural, God-given relations for those “contrary to nature” (Romans 1:26, ESV). In other words, both men and woman among the Gentiles were performing homosexual acts with one another. The behaviors done by the people of Romans are still seen today as a result of the fall. Those who have read other book of the bible concerning marriage and purity understand that homosexual acts are an abomination. God designed marriage and sex to be between one man and one woman.…
INTRODUCTION LGBT people are a part of every community. The LGBT community in itself is diverse, comprising of people of all ages from different racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, from all over the world. LGBT is the initialism that stands for “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender”. The initialism is meant to highlight the diversity of sexuality and gender identity-focused cultures.…
William Benemann had clear intent when writing his most recent novel, Men in Eden: William Drummond Stewart and Same-sex Desire in the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade. Answering the call of Jim Wilke's Frontiers magazine article suggesting the topic, Benemann set to "restore William Drummond Stewart to his place at the table," (2). Though Benemann doubts any intentional misrepresentation of Stewart's sexual history, he believes that most historians simply did not consider the possibility that he was anything other than heterosexual. Men in Eden “explores the role… (of gay men) in... a nineteenth-century mercantile setting,” investigating the draw that such an isolated, yet traditionally masculine, environment might have held (4).…
The 1990s were an era of increasing recognition of homosexuality in broadcast media, so much so that scholar Ron Becker referred to the period as “the gay 1990s”, as programs increasingly began to depict gay characters both explicitly and implicitly. Since the emergence of such characters the representation of members of the LGBTQ+ community has increased and broadened, which is especially evident when comparing the “Men on Film” sketch from the pilot of FOX’s In Living Color in 1990, and ABCs How to Get Away with Murder (2014-present). The depictions of LGBTQ+ characters in these programs represent the evolution and synthesis of audience targeting in increasingly competitive industrial environments and in the increasingly tolerant sociopolitical…
Influences of Sexual Behaviors Throughout the course of history, natural law inadvertently created a culture that in and of itself bears a certain level of responsibility in shaping the sexual behaviors of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations. The principles of natural law as standards have been applied to theories of ethics, politics, civil law, and religious morality (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2011). Digress to 636c, and the dialogs of Plato, who’s writing first articulate central ideas of natural law. In Book One of Plato 's Laws, he describes opposite-sex sex acts as pleasurable by nature while same-sex sexuality is unnatural (The Project Gutenberg, 2008).…
