Therapist: Well I assumed from your response.
Holden: Just because I don’t blame him doesn’t mean I blame myself for chrissakes!
Therapist: Then who do you blame Holden?
Holden: I don’t blame anyone… Things can happen without people messing around with it. You don’t honestly think that every time a tree falls in the woods that people caused that?
Therapist: What if wind blew that tree over Holden? Then we blame the wind.
Holden: So what, you are saying the wind caused our fight?
Therapist: Maybe, what do you think?
Holden: I think it was everything; The snow, the wind, Stradlater porking Jane in goddam Ed Banky’s car. I think that sometimes, the entire world functions in a way that helps me get my ass kicked.
Therapist: So in a way, you blame everybody?
Holden: Yeah… I guess when you put it that way.
Therapist: Do you mind if we talk about Phoebe?
Holden: Sure, what about her?
Therapist: Why did you go to see her?
Holden: I thought about me freezing to death, and I remembered how much it hurt when Allie died, and I couldn’t bear putting her through that.
Therapist: You thought that you were going to die… Why did you think of Phoebe and not your parents?
Holden: My goddam parents probably wouldn’t care if I froze in some back alley
