This evaluation will reflect on my practice during the activity which I planned on the 20th of March 2017 and participated in on the 7th of April 2017 with a resident within my placement, Mr X as previously discussed. Using theories from social influences and human behaviour and development I was able to see Mr’s perspective on issues which he has spoken in confidence about, and also how the community may feel towards someone like Mr X without knowing his background or personality. By complying with the NMC Codes of conduct I treated Mr X as an individual without judgement and with respect throughout the entire activity (NMC, 2015). Safe working practice was also a key aspect leading up to and during the activity, this is knowledge not only gained from my HNC course but by thoroughly researching the care homes policies and procedures in relation to risk assessments. Throughout the planning and development of the activity I tried to ensure where possible that I linked theory learned during my course into practice leading up to and during the activity. By acknowledging Mr X’s needs during the activity, when an opportunity for a friend to sit and chat with Mr X I felt it was appropriate to allow this to happen as improving Mr x’s social well-being was the overall goal set out for Mr X during this

Over the course of studying E214 I have thought greatly about my own practice working as an HLTA in a mainstream primary school, where I mainly work with children that experience barriers to learning. These barriers are due to the children having special educational needs or due to having English as an additional language. I now question whether the children I work with are part of a system that has created othering and if through them being othered they included as fully as possible or are they still subject to exclusion through the barriers they experience when accessing the national curriculum or through their progress not being as high as expected by society. (online unit 17) The focus of education appears to be about the grades and progress…

If service users, carers and social workers work alongside each other instead of against each other they can both give feedback back and forth and work in partnership to form better outcomes for others in similar situations. This will help build up relationships and helps the understanding of both parties. This situation was an impacting one to reflect on as the Congress day was set up to help widen our knowledge and I found it highly beneficial from this specific workshop that 'service users and carers are so diverse and not two are alike.' (Congress day, 2017) This means that a social worker needs to have the skill of adapting to suit the service user and carers needs they are working with.…

Social workers aim to protect vulnerable people from abuse, neglect or self-harm and help to enhance their well-being and quality of life (University of York, 2014). It can be achieved via anti-oppressive practice (AOP) and anti-discriminatory practice (ADP). These two approaches are linked but differ in focus. Social Care Institute for Excellence defines ADP as an approach which seeks to reduce, undermine or eliminate discrimination, eradicate it from the social workers practice and challenge it in the practice of others (SCIE. 2014). Payne in 2005 defined discrimination as a means of identifying individuals and groups with certain characteristics and treating them less well than people or groups with conventionally valued characteristics…
