Hip Hop is a style of popular music of US black and Hispanic origin, featuring rap with an electronic backing. Hip Hop is the most listened to music in the world according to Spotify’s analysis. While analyzing the top hip hop songs of 2018, I found that all of them have three things in common that may make them a hit, songs singing about gang-related actions, love or some type of romantic relationship, and having catchy repeating phrases make the charts, such as these songs “God’s Plan” by Drake, “Rockstar” by Post Malone, and “Finesse” by Bruno Mars all contain these three factors and that’s why they are on the top charts.

Songs that have this type of involvement are usually on the top because humans are attracted to the action. “God’s Plan” by Drake even though it is a song about what God's plan is, there are still a lot of bad things in life. Such as the speaker says “It's a lot of bad things / That they wishin' and wishin' and wishin' and wishin' / They wishin' on me / I been movin' calm, don't start no trouble with me / Tryna keep it peaceful is a struggle for me”, the speaker has a lot of complications in his/her life. “Rockstar” by Post Malone, the speaker says “And they always be smokin' like a Rasta (-sta, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah) / Fuckin' with me, call up on a Uzi / And show up, man, them the shottas (-tas) / When my homies pull up on your block / They make that thing go grrra-ta-ta-ta (ta, grrra-ta-ta-ta-ta)”, the speaker is in a gang and ready to fire his/her gun at any time. “Finesse” by Bruno Mars a song about love even has hard times throughout “No my baby don't play / Blame it on my confidence / Oh, blame it on your measurements / Shut that shit down on sight / That's right”, the speaker is having rough times with the girl he is on a date with. All of these songs relate to fighting/gang relations in some way. Meaning that we like to see and hear about it, but never be involved in …show more content…
One of the biggest reasons why music involving love is so popular is because of the fact that love is in everyone’s lives. Every person wants to be loved and/or wants to love someone. “God’s Plan” the speaker has a lot of love in his life, he/she says “She said, "Do you love me?" I tell her, "Only partly" / I only love my bed and my momma, I'm sorry, / Don't pull up at 6 AM to cuddle with me / You know how I like it when you lovin' on me / I don't wanna die for them to miss me.”“Rockstar” may not be as direct, but it has some relations that are associated with love, such as the speaker saying “I've been fuckin' hoes, I've been in the Hills fuckin' superstars” meaning that he may not be in love, but still having relationships with woman. In “Finesse”, it is not as noticeable either, but it has felt that come with being loved, the speaker says “Ooh, don't we look good together? / There's a reason why they watch all night long, When I'm walkin' with you / I watch the whole room change, We out here drippin' in finesse / It don't make no sense.” Songs may not be directly about love, but it may be, just harder to see. So many songs are about love because it is one of the easiest topics to sing/write about since it is in our daily lives, plus it is one of the easiest topics to be able to connect to your audience since love is around
