Hindu Mythology has broad area that deals with death. According to Hindu Mythology, when a person dies, his or her soul roams near his or her home for the next thirteen days. The mythology explains the reason that the soul just cannot leave the family members because of the close attachment the dead person had with them. On the day of death, family members bury the dead body in the ground nearby the temple, or cremate at the river bank. During the following thirteen days, family members do their best to get that person’s death meaningful by performing different religious rituals, praying to god, and donating food and clothes to needy people. After the ceremony ended on the thirteenth day, I asked my parents about this myth’s significance. My parents explained me that according to Hindu Mythology, when a person dies, his or her path to heaven or hell depends upon his or her karmas during human life. So, family members pray to God by following this myth and request God to forgive dead person’s bad karma to allow him or her into heaven.
Although I felt little confused to understand this myth at the beginning, but once I understood it, I followed it whenever someone died in my family, and I will continue to follow this myth in the future.
