Hester’s positive outlook of herself contrasts that of the puritan society, whom initially hated her, which later leads to Hester redeeming herself, and the town praising her for the good deeds she has done. Hester’s view of herself differs from the town’s as she see’s herself as a confident, independent women, which ultimately helps her overcome the town’s negative perspective of her. Hester realizes the sin she has committed and is determined to change her identity for the better, by doing community tasks, she tries to rid herself of the negative connotation her presence gives off. After catering towards the sick and the dead for a long time, she is finally starting to receive the affection of the people that she so truly deserves. Soon after, the “A,” Hester wears upon her breast changes meaning, signifying able, or angle, even the, “wise and learned men of the community.”(Hawthorne 243) are in awe with the resounding changes the community has for Hester, and it’s as if, “she assumed a freedom of speculation,” and has gone above and beyond what women of that age could ever accomplish, to walk from the fine line of hatred to love. In addition, the fact that Hester is a woman adds to the degree of difficulty required to accomplish such a task. The revolutionary change she made supports the women community as a whole, and the good qualities she displayed reveals the positive impact she is starting to have on the Puritan society. The isolation Hester has lived through made her stronger, it gave her a purpose, to overcome the awful circumstance set in front of her. However, some may argue that Hester should still be punished for her awful deed of adultery, this not only hurt her own public image, but it also had an effects on Dimmesdale and Chillingworth, these two characters ended up dying in the midst of their own.
