Heroin Drugs : A Growing Problem Essay

The use of heroin has become a growing problem in the United States. Not only is it a lethal drug, but it also can harm the others around you while you are on the drug. Now, in the city of Toledo, Ohio the heroin drug has become such a rapidly growing problem. Many people are oblivious to the fact that this is such a big deal, and they think that it won’t happen to them or one of their loved ones. “...heroin use among teens is up 80 percent in the last 10 years.” (Thomas) More people are needing help to get away from this drug more than ever before. “The Toledo Police Department said they seized about $400,000 dollars worth of heroin in 2011. This year, just through August, they have seized $1.36 million.” (Thomas) These addicts clearly need help to get themselves better. One solution is the use of prescribed medications such as Naltrexone, Methadone, and Buprenorphine. Another option would be to send these people to a rehabilitation facility where their mental health can be treated and they can become clean.
Heroin addicts can be prescribed medications that will help wean them off of the addictive drug and help that addict become clean. The most common treatments for opioid addiction are Naltrexone more commonly known as Vivitrol, Methadone, and Buprenorphine. “Naltrexone is an antagonist medication that prevents opioids from activating their receptors.
