Health Informatics Essay

Just a few months ago, I had no clue what health informatics was. I was in the process of a major change when my advisor told me about it. I knew I wanted an interactive job, but I also knew that I wanted to be in the health field. I just wasn’t sure what it was I wanted to do in the field of health. I thought about being a surgeon, a dentist, a nurse, a perfusionist, an anesthesiologist, the list goes on. I did a lot of thinking about these careers and realized that I didn’t want to do any of them and so I looked into health informatics. From a general standpoint what I found was that health informatics was dealing with electronic health records and that it was put in place due to the healthcare reform, but after a little digging I realized it was so much more. The first thing that caught my attention about health informatics is how it implements technology to improve healthcare. Health informaticist are trying to make healthcare more personalized for patients and doctors so that health care can be more efficient. By personalizing healthcare to patients doctors can better assess illnesses and treatment plans for patients that are more cost efficient and accurate for both the patient and hospital. With health informatics I can be a critical thinker and an innovator. I have always loved problem solving and now I can put it to good use. I would like to help doctors communicate with their patients better. I would like to do this by creating a visual program that can show any patient what their current health habits, illnesses, and/or treatments will do to their bodies over time. I think it would be easier for patients to understand what’s going on with their bodies with a visual because sometimes it’s hard to understand something you don’t have background knowledge on. With this program seeing is believing. If patients could see the damage that they are doing to their own bodies they would have more of a push to start living healthier lifestyles. Also if patients could see what their illness is doing to their bodies they’d be more likely to properly follow the procedures to their treatment plans.
